A public installation capturing the collective coming-out experience of Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ community.

BACKGROUND
AN EPICENTER FOR THE SOUTH.
For over 50 years, the residents of Atlanta have celebrated the LGBTQ+ community through parades, gatherings, and celebrations. But as political backlash grows, what role can public space play in shaping visibility and belonging? In uncertain times, even a place to sit becomes an opportunity to take a stand.

OBJECTIVE
A PLACE OF [SELF] DISCOVERY.
Coming out is a personal journey shaped by tension, transformation, and the unknown, but it should never exist in isolation. How can a public space represent the complexity of the coming out experience, and invite the community to sit with it, move through it, and discover meaning together?

FRESH BEGINNINGS.
The seat grounds the form, representing early stability provided by the family unit. It’s where identity first takes shape.

PRESSURE BUILDS, IDENTITY FOLDS.
As the seat transitions into the back, glass emerges, like the truth solidifying beneath the surface. At the same time, the metal begins to deform, bending and creasing under mounting external pressure. This section of the chair materializes the duality of this period of life, when internal identity collides with external expectation.

RELIEF & NEW BEGINNINGS.
Nearing the top, the metal gives way to an unobstructed view of the glass. Now fully visible, it rises unbound and radiant. This final moment marks a sense of liberation. No longer hidden, the true identity is embraced. It’s the transformative freedom of living openly.

IMPACT
REFRACTION OR REFLECTION?
This installation leans on the nature of a seat in a public space, slowing the pace of passersby and creating a moment for rest and reflection. Whether experienced up close or admired from afar, it invites visitors to consider what it means to be seen.
